    The Senior Lab Coordinator provides lab support services to faculty within the science department. This position supervises and trains junior lab coordinators in lab support services and daily operations. manages daily lab operations, oversees a large percentage of the operating budget of the science department, and communicates regularly with the department chair and faculty.

    Duties, Roles & Responsibilities:

    1. Recommend to Purchasing Office all purchases of departmental supplies and equipment except minor purchases (i.e. textbooks and print cartridges made by faculty)
    Suggest and obtains bids for supplies and equipment regarding capital budget requests.

    2. Assure accuracy and agreement between receipts and Banner system.
    Forecast trends and note problem areas.
    Evaluate departmental needs for next fiscal year.
    Appraise the need for fund shifting and make requests accordingly.

    3. Approve and handle disposal of chemical and biological waste including hazardous chemicals, possible human pathogens and rarely radioactive waste. Collect in compatible container, label with proper hazard classification, write bill of lading, package all according to Federal guidelines and laws. Arrange for waste pick up .
    Arrange for proper disposal by treatment, reduction, regular dumpster, or autoclave according to SOP including recording disposition in a computer database.
    Coordinate safe removal of special hazard chemicals and accidental spills.
    Interpret policies and regulations pertaining to chemical/biological materials and safety.

    4. Supervise lab coordinators and any other temporary staff or work study students.
    Train in all areas of lab skills and safety.

    5. Supervise special events (tours) as needed.
    Assist faculty with questions regarding labs and recommends technical solutions for lab issues.

    6. Recommend materials needed to properly conduct laboratory classes for the natural sciences on all campuses for the Natural Sciences to include but not limited to: Anatomy/Physiology, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry (Inorganic, Organic, and Biochemistry), Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geology (Physical, Historical), Meteorology, Microbiology, Nutrition, and Physics (Algebra-based, Calculus based, Conceptual).
    Prepare chemical, biological reagents and solutions including proper, legal labeling and use compatible containers.
    Inoculate microbial cultures using sterile technique.
    Place and connects laboratory equipment.
    Sets up lab demonstrations for instructors.
    Instruct and answer questions related to the proper and safe use of equipment for faculty.
    Supervise safety compliance in labs and prep areas in accordance with college policies and procedures.

    7. Take down Laboratory setups.
    Remove supplies and equipment from laboratories in a timely fashion while noting any need for repair or replacement. Clean lab surfaces and equipment including disinfection when contamination is likely. Record consumable supply needs on Order Request Form.

    Minimum Qualifications
    1. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
    2. Bachelor’s degree in related area, preferably chemistry or biology plus:
    3. 2 years of experience managing a laboratory setting.
    4. 2 years of documented supervisory experience
    5. 2 years managing a budget.
    6. Laboratory experience in the physical and or life sciences and experience with chemical instrumentation.
    7. Knowledge of hazardous waste disposal – both chemical and biological.
    8. Ability to work fast and accurately.
    9. Ability to be flexible and handle last minute changes.
    10. Multi-task successfully.
    11. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds
    12. Stand for up to four hours at a time
    13. Wear personal protective equipment for up to three hours
    14. Tolerate moderate levels of dust, odors and chemical fumes;
    15. Distinguish colors accurately.
    16. Agility to climb short distances and flexibility to crawl over and around heavy equipment.
    17. Valid Colorado Driver’s License and meet the College’s insurability guidelines. 15. Must successfully pass a criminal background check.

    Preferred Qualifications
    1. Master’s Degree in related area, preferably chemistry or biology
    2. Experience working with inorganic and organic chemicals and their disposal.
    3. Experience working with infectious cultures and autoclave.
    4. Formal training in hazardous waste disposal – both chemical and biological.
